My greatest hit
What am I doing in this place
Surrounded by people I can’t face
Perhaps I’m looking for the words that might fit
When I write the lyrics of my greatest hit
I’d better hurry home to my den
To my guitar, my paper and my pen
Keep the lamp above the table lit
So I’ll be ready when it comes; my greatest hit
I should be watching the wheels of fire roll
I should listen to the bells in the old church toll
I should pay a visit to the tent where the old man sit
To gather wisdom for my greatest hit
Stardom and glamour, to me that’s all the same
But I’ll deal with that once I rise to fame
But believe me when I say I won’t forget
My old friends when I get my greatest hit
I know I’ve wasted too much precious time
Sometimes I think there is no graver crime
At least I’ve started and I promise I won’t quit
Until I know I have written my greatest hit
